SOCIAL INFORMATION

Clubs and Associations

Hong Kong has a wealth of clubs, organizations and associations. From country clubs to business and professional groups, Hong Kong offers many outlets to meet new friends, learn about a new culture or volunteering your services for a worthy cause. Here is a comprehensive list of clubs and organizations in Hong Kong.

Santa Fe Relocation Services consultants should accompany E/E on all possible trips to country and private clubs, check with the General Manager for membership details - note: some clubs have different rules and membership status.

Private Clubs

Hong Kong offers a well-developed network of public sports and recreational facilities, with sports grounds, playgrounds, indoor sports halls, swimming pools and beaches. In addition, many business executives and their families, both expatriate and local, are members of one or more of Hong Kong's social and recreation clubs. These private clubs add a leisurely (and sometimes quite luxurious) dimension to the Hong Kong lifestyle and are an important venue for business and social interaction. Most clubs offer corporate and individual memberships available directly from the clubs or third-party brokers. The following listing includes private clubs popular with expatriate families and takes account of different budgets:

Country Clubs

Most Country Clubs in Hong Kong are geared toward the golfer.  Golf is one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong and there are various public golf courses if the E/E does not wish to become a member of any of the following clubs.

Chambers of Commerce & International Organizations

Hong Kong has many international chambers of commerce, the most active being the American , British, Australian and Canadian. The Scandinavian and Dutch communities are also well represented , there are functions and events on a daily scale most events are sent out via email or faxes.

Women’s Organizations

These organisations tend to target programs and events for women but men are also welcome to join in. Events such as coffee mornings, networking, cooking, language lessons, painting, photography etc are all arranged to keep a busy lifestyle.

Art galleries

These are venues primarily for exhibition purposes, although most will offer works for sale. Those selling works of art and offering framing services on a commercial basis are listed under Art Dealers. Occasional exhibitions held in hotels, shopping plazas, embassies, national cultural centers, universities and at the listed galleries, are advertised in English publications.

Fitness and health

Lifestyles in Hong Kong can all too often lead to extra pounds around the girth! You will probably find a real need to exercise. Aerobics and tai chi sessions are held in most public parks in Hong Kong from 0600 to 0730. Most of the larger hotels have fully-equipped fitness centers. Facilities include some or all of the following: gym equipment, jogging track, tennis and squash courts, swimming pool, aerobic and/or jazz dancing, sauna, massage, beauty parlor. Many apartments and condominium blocks provide excellent facilities on site. You should check carefully the state of fitness equipment before choosing your apartment.

Internet cafes

These have been popping up all over the city. Whichever area you find yourself in you will certainly be able to locate Internet access via a café.

Movies

For information about what’s on and where, check in the advertisement section of the daily newspapers. American, English and local Hong Kong films are shown at most cinemas, usually in original sound track. US and English films are shown with Chinese subtitles. Bookings may be made before each session and prices can vary. Film buffs should also watch the newspapers, e.g. the City section of the South China Morning Post, for notice of films screenings for all the cinemas in Hong Kong.

Rentals

DVDs, & Videos are common items for rental from places such as Blockbuster Video & Movieland.

Music

Most musical instruments are readily available in Hong Kong but can be expensive. Musical instruments can be bought in Tom Lee Music stores and other specialised music shops around Hong Kong Island.

A cheaper alternative may be to purchase second-hand instruments listed in the local newspapers and in magazines. Expatriates leaving Hong Kong can be another source for obtaining second hand musical instruments.

Sheet Music

Printed music can be limited with choice so dealing with suppliers outside of Hong Kong is an alternative.

Reading

In this edition of the Hong Kong Guide you will find a greatly enhanced listing of recommended books covering all aspects of Chinese culture, life and customs. Current novels, international bestsellers, both fiction and non-fiction are available in Hong Kong. Books can be ordered from major booksellers or via the Internet.
